Oladele in his own words.
I like to create things especially images and words. These range from original drawings and paintings in pencil, oil and acrylic, usually based on motifs from traditional African masks and sculpture, to words that light up the page in transcendent poetry and flights of imagination.
After my 4-year old twin son, Deji, died in August 2016 from a tragic gun accident, I mourned him. But I channeled the devastating sorrow of my loss into avenues of action that would help to preserve his memory. My wife Kim and I established the Deji Olusanya Foundation to help prevent gun deaths in children. And in the space of 15 months, I wrote the 3 books of the ‘Itan – legends of the golden age’ trilogy as well as a book of short stories. The first book of the series, ‘Gods and heroes’ published in 2018, is dedicated to both my wife Kim, my indefatigable partner and Muse, and my son, Deji.
PIONEER IN MANY FIELDS
As a writer, physician and artist, I consider myself to be an original thinker – a pioneer in many fields. As an art connoisseur and promoter, in 1987, I was the first entrepreneur in Lagos, Nigeria to organize a yearly Art Show called Sinsemillia Art Expo which pioneered art sales at an affordable cost to the public as a commercial venture outside the walls of traditional museums and galleries. This a concept which has now taken hold in that part of the world.
As a physician, I have trained and worked in some of the best teaching hospitals in the world. I was the first true Fellow – by examination – of the West African College of Surgeons. As a medical researcher and academician, I developed the Olusanya system of social classification which is still used by medical researchers and authors throughout the West African sub-region. This original contribution to medical and social research has been cited in hundreds of published scientific papers since its publication in 1985.
As a work of fiction, ‘Gods and heroes’ is also a first. It is the first time any author would use the genre of the historical novel to tell the history and mythology of an African people, using a blend of myth, history and imagination to make it readable and captivating to the general public.
